FibreNest - Static IP

Introduction

This is less of a blog and more of a public service announcement, indicating that Static IPs are now available if you are on the newer ONT network. I’ve noted my experience plus some notes with the service.

If you are on the 500mbit package, you can request a new IP via a support ticket free of charge. If you are on 250mbit or below, they are available for a £5/month additional charge.

Notes

A few notes from my experiences with the switchover:

  1. Be aware - The switchover for me was not seamless, I had issues with receiving the new address via DHCP and had to be switched back to CGNAT while this was resolved by the “Technical Team”. I expect this is likely as my pfSense may have been requesting the address differently than a standard router, but be careful.
  2. The static address is still handed out via DHCP. You won’t need to configure your firewall to set up the static address.
  3. There is no static allocation of IPv6 at this point, read my other post about IPv6 here

Technical

Just for technical reference, I was assigned an address in the region of 185.241.225.x with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.255 and a gateway of 185.241.255.10. I found that during my issues with DHCP allocation, setting these manually allowed me to resume connectivity for a few hours before needed to restart the interface. This wasnt a permanent solution, but worked until support looked into the issue.
